Households that wanted to get TDT's full selection before 2015 will have to adjust their antennas. Service disruption results from the fact that television stations will have to give up 800 MHz frequencies so that mobile phone operators can use them. Eight million homes will be affected by the change, and it will cost them 200 million euros.
Zapatero's government promised that the state would take on these costs by dipping in the funds it raised selling telephone band waves, but that plan failed when the crisis erupted and paying down the national deficit was deemed more important. As usual, citizens are now carrying the weight.
