Reding gives Mas something to consider

Artur Mas wanted to leverage yesterday's meeting with European leader Viviane Reding to explain how Catalonia could help Europe's future. She was not interested and simply told Mas the same thing that other European Commission members have: if Catalonia seeks independence, it will not get an automatic entry into the EU.

Those who wanted unconditional support from Europe were not happy about Reding's reply, and many doubts remain about Catalonia's future. That said, dialogue can dispel them. Reding pointed out to both sides that time is precious and a solution needs to come quickly.
