Electric companies fight tax hikes

In order to decrease the tariff deficit, which is nearly 25 billion euros, the government is going to reform taxes within the setor. In anticipation of the changes, power company stocks fell sharply yesterday.

The government's new measures amounts to 11.178 billion euros, of which 2.5 billion will be assumed by power companies directly, 3.729 billion by the government and 3.249 by power customers. Windfarms and solar power producers will take on the biggest tax burden.

Only thermosolar power, controled by Abengoa, will be unaffected. Meanwhile, the EU fears the negative impact on renewables and the uncertainty that investors will feel. Operators are asking for alternative solutions that will avoid hurting the sector and consumers.
