Producer Price Index (Jan.) The key driver should be a 2.3% surge in energy prices, driven mostly by oil. Lower natural gas and electricity prices just cannot offset an anticipated 7.6% surge in gasoline prices, especially combined with higher diesel and heating oil prices.

Core prices should climb 0.2%, a bit faster that their six-month average, with first-of-the-year price increases probably not fully captured by the seasonal adjustment process.

Housing Starts and Building Permits (Jan.) It was the third-warmest January on record, and the 29th driest (historical data go back to 1895), so housing should start the year on solid footing. Permits, which are less affected by the weather, are projected to rise 1.5%.
