Op-ed: Mato's health reforms running out of time

Ana Mato's first appearance in front of Congress has primed expectations of an announcement about health spending.

For now, the situation depends on what regional governments can agree to, but time is running short. Most healthcare spending is dedicated to pharmacies, where paradoxically there is a co-pay model that excludes citizens on their pension plan no matter what their financial situation is whereas young couples with kids, in worse situations, pay forty percent of their prescriptions.

So it is critical that we create a co-pay system that corresponds to personal income and does not put all the costs on reducing bills on the pharmacy industry itself. This step would increase jobs in the industry and boost investment in R&D.
