Op-ed: Panama Canal opens new lock, Iberian ports to profit

The opening of another lock at the Panama Canal will attract an influx of commerce to Europe, and the Iberian Peninsula wants to take advantage of the occasion by promoting ports at Lisbon and Algeciras. Spain has bet on the Mediterranean Corridor being one of the main axes of the Tran-European Transport Network and the federal government has agreed to have more infrastructures ready by 2020.

The EU is prioritizing this route and has forecasted that Spain will receive between 10% and 20% of the project funding from the EU, although that does not exempt them from having to put forward their own investments of 7 billion euros per year.

That is possible considering that in our worst year, 2011, we allocated 13 billion. Now, the next government to take office has some hard and delicate work cut out for it, especially since cutbacks and austerity will limit available funds.
