@ Wall Street

Employment report for September. Hardly any job growth, further job losses in the public sector, and an uptick in the unemployment rate.

IHS Global Insight expects another weak employment report for September. Hiring was probably restrained by continuing extreme uncertainty over the outlook, while firings were probably more severe as initial unemployment insurance claims were higher than in August.

We expect just 25,000 jobs added overall ? meaning there would be a loss of 20,000 jobs but for the return to payrolls of 45,000 Verizon workers after a strike. We expect 70,000 private jobs added (just 25,000 ex-Verizon), and a loss of 45,000 government jobs, in line with recent trends. We expect the unemployment rate to tick up to 9.2% from 9.1%.
