Mexican president pushes for bigger emphasis on tourism

Mexico City, Feb 14 (EFE).- The government is implementing a national policy to promote tourism development and creating a "tourism Cabinet" made up of officials from the different levels of government, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said.

Tourism accounts for nearly 9 percent of Mexico's gross domestic product and the industry's employees earn pay that is 30 percent above the national average, Peña Nieto said during an event in Bahia de Banderas, a city in the western state Nayarit.

Tourism "is a great vehicle for moving toward a more prosperous and inclusive Mexico," the president said.

"We have a privileged geographical location, great potential for connectivity, a broad inventory of natural, historic and cultural attractions, but, moreover, our country has demonstrated a great ability to generate quality tourism products," Peña Nieto said.

The Tourism Secretariat and the Economy Secretariat have been instructed to develop a competitiveness plan for each of Mexico's tourist destinations, taking into account what markets they target and their needs, Peña Nieto said.
