NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks cut gains and the Nasdaq composite index temporarily turned negative after news the European Central Bank was stopping monetary policy operations with some Greek banks as they have not been successfully recapitalized.
The news was attributed to euro zone central bank sources.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 23.39 points, or 0.19 percent, to 12,655.39. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 2.25 points, or 0.17 percent, to 1,332.91. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 0.64 point, or 0.02 percent, to 2,894.40.
