elEconomista launches ECO10, the new spanish stock market index

The Spanish business daily elEconomista is launching, through its digital ( and print editions, a new index, ECO10, the first Spanish market index generated by a media organization and based on model portfolios of near 50 brokers, banks and investment firms based in Spain.

Its main challenge it’s to outperform the Ibex 35, the Spanish reference index. The calculation of ECO 10 is done by Stoxx Ltd., the leading European index provider and a joint venture between Deutsche Börse, Dow Jones Indexes and SWX Group. STOXX calculates successful indexes such as the Dow Jones Euro STOXX 50 or Dow Jones STOXX 50. The latter measures the performance of the 50 leading European companies.

ECO10 is an index that is born to outperform the Spanish market. Its first composition includes Telefónica, Santander, Repsol, Acerinox, Cintra, Prisa, Ferrovial, Banco Popular, Altadis and Indra. Every stock has the same weighted and its composition can be revised each quarter based on the Consensus Portfolio of elEconomista.

This consensus merges 48 model portfolios of 48 brokers, banks and investment firms, and is also available daily in the website and on Saturdays in the newspaper. . The new index ECO10 is now available at and can also be checked everyday at the newspaper. In Bloomberg and Reuters the ticker is: eco10p.

ECO10 is the first stock index generated by a media organization in Spain. There have been other experiences worldwide, such as FTSE100, created by the Financial Times. The Dow Jones Industrial Average , which was created by Charles Dow and introduced in May 1896, is today the most popular and most widely quoted US market index and is still maintained by the editors of the Wall Street Journal.
