Veracruz, Mexico, Jan 17 (EFE).- A police chief and a patrolman were arrested for allegedly taking part in the forced disappearance of five young people in the Mexican Gulf state of Veracruz, officials said Sunday.
Six law enforcement agents are now under arrest in connection with the Jan. 11 disappearance of four young men and a 16-year-old girl who were arrested by state police in Tierra Blanca, a town in central Veracruz.
Tierra Blanca police chief Marcos Conde Hernandez and patrolman Otoniel Cruz Linares have been charged in connection with the disappearance of the five young people, whose whereabouts is unknown, the Veracruz Attorney General's Office said in a statement.
Conde Hernandez and Cruz Linares are being held at the prison in the city of Cosamaloapan, where they will appear before a judge.
Bernardo Benitez Herrera, the father of one of the missing young people, filed a criminal complaint last week stating that the five were last seen while being detained at a gas station where they stopped to refuel their vehicle.
Benitez told Radio Formula that one of his neighbors witnessed the arrest.
Fedeal and state police are engaged in an intensive search for the five missing people, deploying more than 140 field and intelligence officers.
