2 Suspects in California shooting die in gunfight with police

Los Angeles, Dec 2 (EFE).- A man and a woman suspected of fatally shooting 14 people and wounding 17 others Wednesday at a social services facility in the Southern California city of San Bernardino died in a confrontation with police, authorities said.

A police officer received non-life-threatening wounds in the exchange of shots.

Acting on a tip, police went to an apartment building in the nearby town of Redlands where they spotted a dark-colored SUV matching the description of the vehicle in which the suspects were seen leaving the scene of the shooting, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan told a press conference.

The SUV pulled out of the apartment building parking lot with police in pursuit.

Police eventually forced the SUV to stop and the two suspects were killed in the ensuing gunfight, while a third person spotted running from the vehicle was apprehended.

Dressed in military-style clothes, the two dead suspects were both armed with assault rifles and handguns, Burguan said, adding that investigators were still working to determine whether the third person was involved in the massacre.

The attack at the Inland Regional Center, a facility that provides services to people with developmental disabilities, began around 11 a.m., police said.

The complex comprises three buildings, including a conference center that was being used Wednesday by an outside group - apparently the San Bernardino county health department - and which was the target of the attack.

An item left behind inside the conference center by the attackers may be an explosive device, the chief said.

San Bernardino is a city of more than 200,000 people roughly 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Los Angeles.
