Suspects die in shootout with police in Mexico

Mexico City, Dec 29 (EFE).- Five suspects were killed in a clash with police in the Mexican Gulf coast state of Veracruz, authorities said Monday.

The incident occurred Sunday night in the city of Poza Rica, the state government said.

State police officers were engaged in an intelligence operation when the suspects, traveling in four vehicles, spotted the cops and began shooting, according to the official statement.

No police officers or civilians were hurt in the gunfight.

The police seized the suspects' vehicles and a number of heavy-caliber guns, the government statement said, describing the five dead men as "members of a criminal cell."

Veracruz state has been the scene of violent turf battles between rival drug cartels.
