GEF Adds to Investment Team

Global Environment Fund (GEF) has hired former Carlyle Group partner, Mr. Jay Powell, as a managing partner for the firm, responsible for growth capital, and private equity investments in North America. As part this role Mr. Powell serves as a managing director with the firm´s clean technology investment team making investments in alternative energy and clean technology companies. Mr. Powell is also responsible for GEF´s investments in private equity and other asset classes in North America.

Prior to joining GEF, Mr. Powell co–founded Severn Capital Partners, a private investment firm focused on specialty finance and opportunistic investments in industrial companies. From 1997 to 2005, Mr. Powell was a partner at The Carlyle Group, where he headed the North American Industrial Buyout Group. At Carlyle, Mr. Powell was a member of the investment committee and participated in the investment decisions for all of the firm´s U.S. buyout investment activities.

Prior to The Carlyle Group, Mr. Powell was a managing director and served as head of the mergers and acquisitions group at Dillon, Read & Company. Prior to Dillon Read, he was a managing director at Bankers Trust Company, where he was responsible for client coverage, mergers and acquisitions, and related areas of the bank.

In addition to his investment experience, Mr. Powell served as the Under Secretary for Finance for the U.S. Treasury Department from 1990 to 1993, where he was responsible for Treasury debt markets and Administration policy concerning financial institutions and government–sponsored enterprises.
