Gabon dissolves opposition party in president row

LIBREVILLE (Reuters) - Gabon dissolved the central African country's main opposition party Wednesday, accusing one of its leaders of treason for declaring himself president in a swearing-in ceremony before supporters.

The disbanding of the National Union (UN), announced by the Interior Ministry, marks a step up in tensions in Gabon since Ali Bongo Odimba took over from his father Omar in 2009 after a disputed election. Party Executive Secretary Andre Mba Obame says he won the poll and declared himself "president" late Tuesday.

Gabon, one of the few sub-Saharan countries with a Eurobond, is battling to diversify its economy as its oil riches run out.
