Venezuela says BP seeks approval to sell local assets

CARACAS (Reuters) - BP has asked the Venezuelan government for permission to negotiate the sale of its assets in the South American OPEC member, Venezuela's Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters at a polling center during a parliamentary election, Ramirez also said he was concerned about the level of global crude inventories, and that the priority of the Venezuelan government was price stability.

Last month, he said BP <:BP.LO:>would need authorization from the administration of President Hugo Chavez to sell its minority stakes in two exploration and production joint ventures with state oil company PDVSA, as well as its interest in Venezuela's Petromonagas crude upgrader.

The assets are valued at between $850 million and $1 billion. BP has been seeking to raise up to $30 billion to pay for its oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
