NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks briefly rose in choppy trade on Friday as energy shares gained and investors bet on defensive plays, including McDonald's , offsetting news pointing to more financial sector upheaval.
* Financial shares were broadly lower after a fresh $20 billion government capital injection for Bank of America
* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> off 1.83 points, or 0.02 percent, to 8,210.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> edged down 0.85 points, or 0.10 percent, at 842.89. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 1.22 points, or 0.08 percent, at 1,513.06.
