Poor profit picture and economy worries lash Wall Street

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks skidded on Tuesday, as commodity shares fell on fears of a global recession and a rash of disappointing earnings heightened worries about the deteriorating profit picture.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 231.77 points, or 2.50 percent, to end unofficially at 9,033.66, based on the latest data. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 30.36 points, or 3.08 percent, to finish unofficially at 955.05. The Nasdaq Composite Index sank 73.35 points, or 4.14 percent, to close unofficially at 1,696.68.
