NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow industrials briefly turned positive as 3M shares jumped over 6 percent and then dipped back into negative territory, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq traded lower.
All three indexes had cut losses and were off their session lows, with about an hour left in the regular session.
The Dow Jones industrial average declined 15.77 points, or 0.17 percent, to 9,249.66, well above its session low at 9,004.27. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index shed 7.13 points, or 0.72 percent, to 978.27, off the session low at 954.14. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 34.67 points, or 1.97 percent, at 1,735.36, well above its session low at 1,705.00.
