NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks vaulted sharply higher in volatile trade on Friday, driving the Dow back above 9,000 as reassuring results from Google Inc and IBM buoyed the technology sector and energy stocks rose with oil.
Traders also cited investors who were bargain hunting for stocks that have been beaten down this month.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 183.98 points, or 2.05 percent, at 9,163.24. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 23.06 points, or 2.44 percent, at 969.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 35.25 points, or 2.05 percent, at 1,752.96.
