NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell further in choppy trade on Thursday as persistent fears that the widening credit crisis will tip the global economy into recession derailed an attempted rebound, with financials leading the slide.

The Dow Jones industrial average slid 124.96 points, or 1.35 percent, to 9,133.14. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index tumbled 16.01 points, or 1.63 percent, to 968.93. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 6.31 points, or 0.36 percent, to 1,734.02.

The S&P financial index slid more than 6 percent.
