Dow, S&P 500 lose ground as financials drag

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow and the S&P 500 briefly turned negative in volatile trade on Thursday as financial shares fell due to persistent concerns about the widening impact of the credit crisis.

The Nasdaq clung to modest gains on hopes that not all technology spending was faltering, a day after International Business Machines Corp , a technology services giant, posted a solid quarterly profit.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 4.22 points, or 0.05 percent, at 9,253.88. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.17 points, or 0.02 percent, at 984.77. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 14.32 points, or 0.82 percent, at 1,754.65.
