U.S. Senate committee to examine worst-ever bird flu outbreak

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing on the nation's worst-ever outbreak of bird flu in poultry, a notice issued on Thursday said.

The hearing, set for July 7, will address the impact of the lethal disease on the U.S. poultry sector, according to the notice from Sen. Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican and chairman of the committee.

Nationwide, more than 47 million chickens and turkeys have been killed in the past six months because of bird flu or are set to be culled to prevent the spread of the disease. Egg prices are expected to set a new annual record because of the losses. [ID:nL1N0YW26Y]
