U.S. proposes opening Atlantic in five-year oil, gas drilling plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration on Tuesday said it was contemplating allowing oil and gas exploration off the Atlantic Coast and would seek public comment on whether such a move was too environmentally sensitive.

The plan outlined by the Interior Department beatgins a bureaucratic process that could take years before a site off the coast of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia is cleared for drilling, officials said.

The plan contemplates expanded drilling between 2017 and 2022.
