TORONTO (Reuters) - If Research In Motion Ltd hires an investment bank it would be to help it license its BlackBerry software or negotiate a strategic investment, not to sell the maker of the iconic smartphone, a source close to the company said.
The Canadian company, which was reported to be looking for advisors, has not yet hired any banks, the source said. The company has said it is assessing a range of strategic options.
The company declined to comment on reports it is looking for bankers.
Once one of the continent's best performing technology companies, RIM's BlackBerry device has been losing market share to Apple Inc's
RIM replaced its long-standing co-CEOs in January.
The company is now headed by ex-Siemens AG executive Thorsten Heins, who has said the company is reviewing strategic options including licensing and partnerships. He did not rule out a sale.
