TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion on Thursday reported fiscal second quarter earnings and gross margin figures above analyst expectations, sending its stock up more than 6 percent.
The company earned $796.7 million, or $1.46 a share, on $4.62 billion revenue in the three months ended August 28, up from $475.6 million, or 83 cents, in the same period last year.
Analysts had on average forecast earnings of $1.35 per share on revenue of $4.47 billion, according to Reuters data.
RIM shipped 12.1 million units and added 4.5 million new subscribers in the quarter, compared with analyst estimates of 11.8 million units and 5 million subscribers. Its gross margin was 44.5 percent, versus expectations of 43.9 percent.
