NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow and S&P 500 added gains on Tuesday in a choppy session, boosted by materials stocks and investors' defensive bets.
* The Nasdaq was lower as technology shares fell, with. biotech companies lagging.
* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 101.28 points, or 1.03 percent, to 9,917.77. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 8.75 points, or 0.83 percent, to 1,059.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> slipped 10.55 points, or 0.49 percent, to 2,163.35.
