S&P tops 1,200 on earnings, data

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks notched a fifth straight day of gains on Wednesday as stronger-than-expected corporate results and March retail sales pushed the S&P 500 past 1,200 for the first time in more than 18 months.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 103.54 points, or 0.94 percent, at 11,122.96. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 13.34 points, or 1.11 percent, at 1,210.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> climbed 38.87 points, or 1.58 percent, at 2,504.86.
