SEOUL (Reuters) - News Corp chief Rupert Murdoch will meet senior executives of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Electronics Inc in South Korea, sources said on Wednesday, amid reports he would discuss selling news and movie content through Samsung's broadband TVs.
Media reports have said News Corp may be on the lookout for opportunities in the fast-changing South Korean media sector where recent deregulation has opened the door for major newspapers to expand into broadcasting.
Murdoch, whose media empire includes The Wall Street Journal and Fox television, will meet Lee Jae-yong, son of former Samsung group chairman Lee Kun-hee, and Choi Gee-sung, head of digital media at Samsung, said a source, who asked not to be named.
Another source said LG management, including Chief Executive Nam Yong, will meet Murdoch in Seoul on Wednesday, without elaborating on the topics to be discussed.
Spokesmen for Samsung and LG declined to confirm any plans related to News Corp.
Murdoch will also visit the Panmunjom truce village in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Thursday, said a military official in Seoul.
Murdoch is due to leave South Korea late on Thursday and head to China where he will attend a media summit in Beijing.
He was previously in Japan for talks with several corporate and political leaders including Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, according to a source familiar with the matter.
