GM and UAW set to restart crucial talks

DETROIT (Reuters) - Negotiators for General Motors Corp and the United Auto Workers union were set to resume talks on how to fund retiree health care on Sunday, restarting high-stake negotiations that broke off on Friday.

A person briefed on the discussions said both sides were returning to bargaining near GM's Detroit headquarters on Sunday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear what had prompted the resumption of talks ahead of a Tuesday deadline for GM to submit a new restructuring plan to the U.S. government under the terms of its $13.4-billion federal bailout.

UAW negotiators had walked out of the talks late Friday after objecting to GM proposals on funding for a union-affiliated trust fund for retiree health care.
