Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced yesterday that he would launch a campaign against corruption in response to a flood of scandals afflicting his country in the past several weeks. With the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, in the room, Rajoy talked a lot about promoting a new Transparency Law, a pair of laws about political party financing and setting new term limits for judges.
The news is welcome, but none of these ideas are new, which suggests that Rajoy is crafting his message for whoever is in the room even though his efforts to actually fight corruption have been lackluster. Now, we need to take some action to tone down the corruption in this country.
