The President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, has decided to keep fighting offshore petroleum prospectors. In doing so he is diverting from his political agenda and levying a populist effort against corporate petroleum powers.
The region's President met face to face yesterday with Repsol CEO Antonio Brufau and the General Director of CaixaBank, Juan Antonio Alcaraz, in an attempt to save his islands without considering what Repsol wants even though the oil company says it can proceed with utmost caution. Rivero should put aside his populist re-election politics and reconsider ways to drill for oil off the Canary Islands that will bring jobs and economic growth for the region and Spain.
