Mas lacks international support

Artur Mas keeps running into reality, and each clumsy step shows the weaknesses of his vision. He admits that he does not want to break any laws, which is not possible if he splits from Spain. And declaring that Catalonia can keep using the euro if it secedes is another dead end street.

It would be disastrous for the Catalonian economy. Monetary policy would be dictated from outside the region, but Catalonia would not get any help from the European Central Bank (ECB). The final blow was given by the president of Durao Barroso who made it clear yesterday that the vote is an internal issue to Spain and reiterated that Catalonia would be kicked out of the EU if it secedes. Without legal support, the euro and international backing, Mas and his plan are doomed to fail.
