Blesa case might drop on statute of limitations

The statute of limitations is threatening to undo the Blesa case and the related investigation of what really happened to cause Caja Madrid's downfall. There were two focuses in Judge Elpidio Silva's preliminary investigation: a 26-million euro line of credit to Gerardo Díaz Ferrán and the City Bank of Florida purchase.

The District Attorney's office appealed and stopped investigations on the Díaz credit line. The only remaining motive for continuing an investigation is the strong possibility that Blesa committed other crimes. His email account shows that he habitually gave friends unrestricted lines of credit and other monetary benefits.

The DA's office should defend the public interest, but pressures from the Ministry of Justice suggest that whoever was responsible for Caja Madrid's downfall will go free. For this reason, Gallardón should step down.
