The EU takes aim at seven Spanish clubs

The European Commission is opening an investigatory sanction against seven Spanish football clubs because of suspicions that the received illegal funding from the government. The teams in question: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic de Bilbao, Osasuna, Valencia, Hércules and Elche.

There is evidence that the government helped these clubs with their high debt loads, which if true would have given these teams an edge against their European rivals.

Minister Margallo says that everything is fine. And we hope that it is, for the sake of Spain's fan base and national brand. Because facing off against the EU is not an easy contest, the Spaniards are going to need more than good luck.
