Mas gets one last shot at secession

The Convergence and Union (CiU) and the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) agreed yesterday to hold a meeting about the region's sovereignty on November 9, 2014. This will be a significant and final attempt to negotiate a solution for a long-standing conflict. Throughout the conflict, Arturo Mas has staid steadfast.

After unsuccessful attempts to fix his region's economic problems, he has decided that secession is the best option. He has also called out Rajoy for failing to convince Catalonia that it can have a bright future staying a part of Spain.

The ERC is the biggest instigator and winner of this conflict. The party has influenced Mas to propose an illegal meeting (as Rajoy mentioned yesterday) that, if it takes place, would open the door to succession and Catalonia's expulsion from the EU. And this would be a disaster for both Catalonia and Spain.
