Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy revealed his Galician roots yesterday when he answered "sí" to reforms, but only if lawmakers can build a majority consensus. In other words, no. He said, "One must know who to count on." Which puts us back to where we started.
This country needs more political consensus in order to figure out what needs to be reformed and how. But instead, we have a divided party system that goes against what citizens want.
And it is precisely our politicians' inability to come to agreements that is thwarting reforms that are needed to help Spain adapt to new realities and safeguard the welfare state that has existed here for 35 years. Perhaps we are missing both reforms and good politicians?
