Power sector reforms could push homeowner bill higher

In the next two months Spain is going to have to do what it has not done in the last two years: explain to the EU what measures it will adopt to meet a goal to derive 20% of its electricity generation from renewable energy resources.

The European Commission could take the case before the EU's Court of Justice, something that would further complicate Minister Soria's life.

At the same time, the Minister of Industry is dealing with an investigative report from the EU overseers that scrutinizes recently-approved energy sector reforms and points the finger at renewable energy developers who deny that they have changed the rules in the middle of the game.

On top of that, power bills for homes are going to go up. The tension surrounding energy costs in Spain are worsening the country's image at home and overseas.
