Why food is so expensive

Food prices have risen dramatically since the crisis began in 2008. Some products have shot up by between 20% and 30% because of increasing costs of raw materials, but also because of the voracious appetites of Spanish governments' tax agencies.

Taxes are handicapping the food sector, which grew by 2.3% in value this year while increasing sales by 1.5%. In other words, the sector's value has grown more than its sales volume because of price inflation. Distribution channels are making great efforts to combat these rising prices in order to not shock consumers.
