Energy reforms in jeopardy again

Cristóbal Montoro (Minister of Finance) and José Manuel Soria (Minister of Industry) continue to bicker about energy reforms, and yesterday their ongoing disagreements were voiced loud and clear.

Montoro disagrees with Soria, saying that there has been no agreement about the tariff deficit in the part of the national budget dedicated to the power sector. Montoro is refusing to increase the deficit and Soria to square reformist accounts by manipulating this area of the budget, which is also affecting how companies within the sector plan their own budgets.

A disagreement about how to structure energy reforms reflects the government?s general reluctance to carry out reforms fully and swiftly and preference of political improvisations.
