Prescription drugs will be affected the most by new healthcare spending cuts, losing 3.5 billion euros over the next three years. Eight out of every ten euros that were cut from the budget correspond to drug spending, which have been reduced by 30%. Regional governments will be able to meet their goals by cutting 6,000 employees in the Spanish pharmaceutical industry, and this number could go up another 1,000 this year.
At the same time, Spain has become one of the three countries across Europe with the best access to innovative medicines. These figures show that cutbacks are more important than the political fallout they will create.
