El Prat airport says goodbye to Madrid-Barajas

The Spanish airline industry is about to undergo a monumental change as Barcenlona's El Prat airport will surpass Madrid-Barajas in the number of passengers serviced annually. The milestone will be passed at the end of this month. In May 3.4 million passengers went through Barajas while 3.2 million flew at El Prat.

Why are more passengers now flying from Barcelona? Because business for Ryanair and Iberia has fallen sharply while Vueling is doing extremely well.

With business flagging at Madrid-Barajas, it makes sense that Aena wants to increase activity in Terminal 4 where Iberia and Oneworld operate exclusively. Other airlines have showed a potential for growth, too.
