Miguel Blesa became president of Caja Madrid via an agreement with the Peoples' Party and the CCOO, Spain's major trade union. The United Left party also backed his appointment.
In 2008, the same day that Blesa sent an "irregular" 24-million euro payment to Díaz Ferrán, the CCOO received an additional 25.7 million. Thankful of the bank and Blesa's largesse, the union was quick to defend Blesa as soon as the courts started to prosecute him.
The United Left also received funds. Blesa was reponsible for doling out pieces of the pie so that everyone could have slice and show their thanks. Although now these parties fear that Blesa's imprisonment could clear the path for others to go there, too.
