Cristóbal Montoro has decided to conclude his career in politics. Spain's Finance Minister made the announcement during a meeting with Catalan businessmen just 72 hours after it was made official that Deputy Prime Minister Sáenz de Santamaría would take over for Montoro and take the project lead on a new tax reform and other key economic issues.
The government's economic strategy will reverse with Montoro's stepping down. He was losing popularity after raising taxes against Spaniards.
It makes sense that Montoro would leave politics when he knows that his work has not carried out reforms as needed, increasing Spain's financial problems. Montoro will stand by his word, but he shouldn't wait til the end of his term to step down.
