Employment agreements get watered down

Despite a cheery and convivial photo of a recent meeting between government officials and social agents, it doesn't look like the talks between these two groups will bear much fruit.

Rajoy rejected proposals from Spain's two largest unions to create a national employment pact, although he did admit the possibility of a partial agreement for both social protection and Social Security.

This is worrisome becuase it shows that the Prime Minister is abandoning efforts to carry out needed reforms and is choosing to draft a set of watered-down reforms instead. These lighter reforms will not solve Spain's most salient problems. Without these reforms, the recovery will drag on longer and unemployment will continue to plague the economy.

The government can't evade its responsibility and finish its terms without fixing the country's employment issues.
