A state pact with the opposing party has failed becuase the Peoples' Party rejected it. Rajoy is standing firm and, according to statements from his party's leaders, has ruled out the possibility of an agreement.
The Prime Minister is overlooking the seriousness of his country's economic situation while experts forecast that the ruling government is overly optimistic in its belief that the economy will grow by half a percentage point in 2014. After two years of recession, Spain's economy does not have the strength to boost its GDP growth by 2%.
Under the current circumstances, the government should not hide behind the fact that it has majority power. The Prime Minister needs to carry out major structural reforms in order to get support from parliament and social agents. Not even trying will condemn the country to an even longer crisis.
