Horse meat scandal chalked up to labeling mistake

As the European horse meat scandal continues, no culprits have been named directly. Already, nearly five percent of samples analyzed contained traces of horse meat. These samples came mostly from France and Greece, although evidence of horse meat marketed as beef has been found in all European countries.

The EU's attempt to redefine widespread food system fraud as a labeling mistake is not the best way to deal with a food sanitation problem that will create a battery of economic sanctions that is out of proportion with the real benefits consumers will get.

Closing the investigations without publicizing the brands behind this massive food system fraud hints at a suspicious lack of transparency from the EU.
