Cheval scandal wages on for EU, Spain possibly involved

The time limit that the EU gave countries to determine the levels of horse meat, lamb and pork that have been sold as beef expires on April 15. As governments prepare their data, there is great reason to believe that evidence of widespread deceit will be unveiled.

The United Kingdom has found samples of beef containing nearly 60% horse meat. Meanwhile in Spain, the number of horses killed is twelve times higher than it was before the crisis began. It does not make sense to jump to conclusions now, but if cases of fraud within the European food system are confirmed, the Spanish government will be forced to enact major economic sanctions and increase quality control standards that have softened in recent years.
