Majority rule system would re-democratize Spanish democracy

Prime Minister Rajoy is not going to reform election laws until he gets a broad consensus -- not just an absolute majority. This prudence makes sense and melds with the idea that in order to change the Constitution, it needs to be clear that government officials want to change it.

A need for consensus will not delay discussion of new models for electing candidates for office. Even though the current law made sense in the days in which it was approved, the problem with it today is that the leading political party and its leadership at the national, regional and local government level are making all the rules. This factor saps the democratic spirit from the parties and other government leadership. A majority system like England's needs to be adopted in Spain. Smaller voting areas will exist, giving voters a more direct say about the structure of their government. In other words, voters will participate more in running the nation's democracy.
