RTVE has only saved 99 million euros, which is almost half of the 204 million in cutbacks established by the Ministry of Finance according to a statement issued by the television company's CEO, Leopoldo González-Echenique. He has been in charge of RTVE since July.
Of RTVE's 105 million deficit, 73 million correspond to excess spending (51.3 million in the first quarter and 21 million in the second). Although cutback measures take time to have an effect, it is clear that Montoro should have taken more control of RTVE in order to keep the cleanup plans on track. At this point, it's going to be hard to recover and taxpayers will get hit with the costs.
